Gardening in Thetford

Thetford is unlike anywhere else in Norfolk. It's a town that lives in the shadow of Britain's largest lowland pine forest, and you feel that the moment you look at people's gardens. Scots pine needles blowing across driveways, sandy soil that swallows rain before you've even finished your cup of tea, and a sense of being slightly tucked away from the rest of the county — that's Thetford all over. The town sits where the Little Ouse and River Thet meet, right on the Norfolk-Suffolk border, and it's been here far longer than most people realise. Castle Hill, that great Norman motte in the centre of town, has watched over these streets for nearly a thousand years. Dad's Army was filmed around here too — there's even a statue of Captain Mainwaring on the riverside.

The residential areas of Thetford tell a particular story. Much of the town was expanded rapidly in the 1960s and 70s as part of London's post-war overspill programme, which means a huge proportion of Thetford's housing stock is mid-century estates — think Abbey estate, Barnham Cross, and the Canterbury Way area. These homes typically come with decent-sized rectangular back gardens, many of them backing onto open green spaces or the forest edge itself. More recently, new-build developments off the A11 corridor and towards the Kingsfleet area have added modern homes with smaller, turfed plots that need establishing from scratch. Then there are the older properties around King Street, White Hart Street, and near the Priory ruins — terraced houses and cottages with compact, often walled gardens.
