Gardening in Brundall — A Village Shaped by Water

Brundall sits where the River Yare widens towards the Norfolk Broads, and that proximity to water defines almost everything about gardening here. Walk along The Street or down towards Brundall Marina, and you'll notice the gardens are greener, lusher, and more unruly than those a few miles inland. The fertile alluvial soil and high water table create ideal growing conditions — which sounds wonderful until your lawn is ankle-deep by mid-May and the privet hedge has added six inches while you weren't looking.

The village has a genuine mix of housing. Around the centre — near St Lawrence's Church and the old village hall — you'll find traditional Norfolk flint and brick cottages with compact, established gardens full of mature shrubs, fruit trees, and old boundary hedges. Head towards Braydeston Avenue and Cuckholds Lane, and the plots get bigger: generous lawns, vegetable patches, and tall hedgerows that separate neighbours. Then there are the waterside properties along Riverside Estate and towards Coldham Hall, where gardens slope down to the river, often with willows, alders, and reed beds at the margins. These need careful, knowledgeable maintenance — you can't just attack a riverside garden with a strimmer without understanding what's holding the bank together.

Brundall has also seen newer development in recent years, particularly around the Links Avenue area and towards Blofield Heath.
