Poringland sits about five miles south-east of Norwich along the B1332, the old Bungay Road that runs from Trowse right down through South Norfolk. It's one of those villages that has quietly grown from a rural parish into a substantial community — around 4,000 people now — without losing its distinctly village feel. The crossroads where The Street meets Shotesham Road still feels like the centre of things, with the Royal Oak and the local shops marking the heart of the village, and Poringland Community Centre hosting everything from yoga classes to parish council meetings.

What makes Poringland interesting from a gardening perspective is the sheer variety of properties. Walk up The Street and you'll pass Georgian farmhouses with half-acre plots that have been cultivated for generations, then turn onto Devlin Drive or Overtons Way and you're in classic 1970s-80s estates with well-established but manageable gardens. Head further out towards the newer developments off Chet Road and Shotesham Road, and you'll find compact modern plots where every square metre matters. The soil around Poringland is heavy boulder clay — the same stuff that stretches across much of South Norfolk. It's genuinely fertile once you work with it, but it waterlogs easily in winter and bakes hard in a dry summer. Framingham Earl, which merges seamlessly with Poringland along the B1332, adds another dimension. The area around Framingham Earl High School and the recreation ground includes some lovely mature plots, many with established fruit trees, large herbaceous borders, and the kind of garden that benefits from regular maintenance visits rather than occasional blitzes. It's common for homeowners here to have inherited gardens from previous owners who were keen gardeners — beautiful spaces, but a real commitment to keep up if you're working full-time and commuting into Norwich.

Poringland Woods, the community woodland just south of the village, is a reminder of how green this area is. That's lovely for walks, but it also means autumn brings a serious amount of leaf fall — especially for properties along Rectory Lane and the roads bordering the woodland. Mature oaks, beech, and horse chestnuts dump leaves well into November, and on clay soil, leaving them on a lawn through winter is a recipe for patchy, mossy grass come spring.
