Gardening in Cromer — A Town Shaped by the Sea

Walk along the East Cliff in Cromer on a blustery afternoon and you'll immediately understand why gardening here is different from anywhere else in Norfolk. The town sits high on crumbling chalk and sand cliffs, the North Sea stretching out below the famous pier, and every gust carries a fine mist of salt spray that settles on leaves, lawns, and boundary hedges. It's a place with real character — the tower of St Peter and St Paul's Church (the tallest in Norfolk at 49 metres) rises above a jumble of Victorian hotel facades, flint-walled fisherman's cottages, and Edwardian villas with long rear gardens that slope towards the cliff edge.

That mix of property types means Cromer's gardens are wonderfully varied. Along the residential streets off Norwich Road and up towards Cromer Ridge — the highest point in East Anglia, where the land crests at around 100 metres — you'll find established family homes with decent-sized lawns, mature hedges, and the occasional productive vegetable patch. Closer to the seafront, gardens tend to be smaller and more exposed. The holiday lets and second homes along the Runton Road and Overstrand Road corridors often sit empty for weeks at a time, returning to life just as the garden has turned into a tangle of overgrown grass and wind-battered shrubs.

The soil here is lighter and sandier than what you'd find inland around Aylsham or North Walsham. It drains fast — brilliant for avoiding the waterlogging that plagues heavier Norfolk clay — but it means lawns dry out quickly in summer and nutrients wash through before roots can grab them. Regular lawn mowing at the right height actually helps here: keeping the cut a touch longer encourages deeper roots and holds moisture in the soil for longer between rains.
